Scholarship Competition For Male Voice Students

Eligibility: The competition is open to full-time students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate
music degree program.
Audition: Competitors must submit an audition audio file. Sixteen finalists will be selected from
those applying. See the competition rules for details regarding audition requirements.
Required competition program: Three works having a combined length of no more than ten
minutes. The program must include
- an aria from the opera or oratorio literature,
- an art song, and
- a selection of the singer’s choice.

Jere H. Brophy Scholar $1,400
Albert Rees Davis Scholars $1,250
Performance Opportunities: Award recipients are encouraged to participate in the 2018–2019 Singers’ Club rehearsal and concert schedule. Award recipients may be invited to perform as soloists in Singers’ Club concerts as opportunity permits. They also may be invited to perform in a recital for benefactors.

Competition Venue Information
Judson Manor has dedicated free and secure parking available adjacent to the facility. Enter the lot from East 107th Street, opposite University Circle United Methodist Church. The main entrance to the Judson Manor building is on 107th street.
Members of the Singers’ Club will be present to welcome finalists, familiarize them with the facility, and direct them to warm-up and performance spaces.
The competition is free open for the public to attend.
About the Scholarship Namesakes
S. Livingston (Liv) Mather was a dedicated member of The Singers’ Club for many years, and a devoted friend until his death in 1960. The Singers’ Club is grateful to the Trustees of the S. Livingston Mather Charitable Trust for providing the support that catalyzed the formation of the Mather Competition and continues to support it to this day, and to the Board of the Albert Rees Davis Endowment Fund for perpetuating the Mather Scholarship along with the Mather Trust.
George L. Hackett
George L. Hackett was a member of The Singers’ Club for fifty years, serving the Club in many capacities including President. He was named an Honorary Member in 1993. In 2000, his sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Robert Arnold, established a scholarship fund in his name. Many others have since contributed to the George L. Hackett Scholarship Endowment Fund as a memorial to this fine gentleman.
Jere H. Brophy
Jere Brophy was a well-known senior executive of several materials companies who had a lifelong love for instrumental and vocal music. He was an avid supporter of the Mather Competition, giving freely of his energy and resources to support it. His wife Elaine instituted the Brophy Scholarship in 2014 to honor his love of and commitment to The Singers’ Club and the Mather Competition.
Albert Rees Davis
Albert Rees Davis provided musical leadership to The Singers’ Club during his tenure as conductor from 1906 to 1919. The Albert Rees Davis Endowment Fund was created at his death. The fund has given sustaining support to The Singers’ Club of Cleveland ever since, and currently provides up to three Albert Rees Davis scholarship awards annually.
